I thought you guys were crazy. Y’all might be on to something

When I was in school to become a merchant mariner I was taught that I would be able to spot vessels at about 13-14 miles out from the bridge (about 100-120ft above the water). Anything farther would start to dissappear behind the curve of earth, a term called “Hull Down”. I routinely spot vessels 20 -23 miles away ON A good day confirmed by radar and ECDIS. I have never observed seeing just the top of the Superstructure. I can make out the hull as well at that distance.
